Beginning To See The Dark / Tempest (Acoustic)
On my 51st birthday, I released a new single. Beginning To See The Dark was a song recorded during the tracking for my debut album, It Will Still Keep Feeling Rough, but it never quite fit into the track listing. So, I held it back for a bit.
Then, my basement studio room flooded, so I moved my equipment into another section of the basement and recorded an acoustic version of the lead single from IWSKFR, Tempest. I liked the way it turned out, so I decided to release it as the B-side along with Beginning To See The Dark.
Side A: Beginning To See The Dark
An outtake from the sessions that led to the album “It Will Still Keep Feeling Rough.”
——
Side B: Tempest (Acoustic)
An acoustic version of the lead track off the album “It Will Still Keep Feeling Rough.”

The song has this oddly spacey vibe even though it’s primarily a folk or singer-songwriter track. What will suck you in the most with this new single is the slide guitar. Thayer’s vocals are going to lull you in, and then the guitar is going to hypnotize you for the song’s full length. It’s the type of song that feels like it’s building to a giant climax which never quite comes. This may sound like an odd compliment, but “Beginning to See the Dark” always feels a bit off. The guitar sounds like it’s slightly out of tune, and the song feels like it’s a step or two behind itself. But that’s why you’re going to love it.

We were immediately drawn to the haunting and beautifully crafted “Beginning To See The Dark”, the theme of uncertainty that lingers overs the track quietly settles in your soul giving room for solitary reflection. “Beginning To See The Dark” unfolds slowly with a hushed lilting intensity, building subtly until drums enter in the final third, giving way to a slinky and mesmerizing musical ending. The lyrics reflect on themes of struggle and the inevitability of uncertainty, with the refrain, “Now I’m beginning to see the dark in all things,” capturing Thayer’s reflective perspective and voice.
